The Eirik Borve Fund for Foreign Language Instruction

Funded by The Eirik Borve Fund for Foreign Language Instruction, the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities offers a limited number of competitive grants that further foreign language instruction and internationalization. Proposals are requested for initiatives that develop innovative foreign language instruction that is tailored to meet the needs of today’s students for international educational experiences. The Borve Fund places a special emphasis on:
- the use of technology and new media in presenting course content to students;
- ensuring access to both local and international resources; and
- developing appropriate means of pedagogical assessment and evaluation.
Proposals may request capital support, including (but not limited to):
- Construction or renovation of smart classrooms dedicated to instruction in foreign languages
- Digital humanities technical expertise and technology infrastructure in support of developing curricula and assignments that combine both multimedia and information competencies and research skills
Proposals may request support for the development of innovative foreign language instructional methods, materials, and courses, including, but not limited to:
- Hiring of adjunct faculty to accomplish proposal goals or to support course release
- Honorarium to support faculty collaboration and accomplish proposal goals
- Instructional materials
- Travel expenses
- Research working groups dedicated to innovative foreign language instruction, inclusive of faculty and students, as well as colleagues from regional and cultural education institutions, to collaboratively investigate a targeted humanities issue or question
- Interdisciplinary working groups to extend scholarly exploration beyond the formal channels of classroom instruction and seminar investigation
Proposals may request training support to prepare graduate students and faculty for developing research and instructional tools, including, but not limited to:
- Services, software, and equipment (such as database hosting, XML editing software, and fabrication materials; haptic and touch interface devices; and geotagging/geolocative devices)
Funds are available to full-time faculty in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural and mathematical sciences departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as full-time lecturers in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
All awardees will be required to produce a report (ca. 300 words). Final reports are due within four weeks of the conclusion of the project.
All awardees will be required to collaborate with the Baker-Nord staff in publicizing their project to the Case Western Reserve University community through website and other relevant outlets.
Resulting publications and presentations should acknowledge the support of The Eirik Borve Fund for Foreign Language Instruction.
Awardees will be notified no later than May 1, 2017. Funds must be spent by June 30, 2018. Awardees should work with Baker-Nord staff to determine how best to process the grants through the faculty member’s home department.

Eirik Borve Fund for Foreign Language Instruction Cover Sheet
In addition to the cover sheet complete applications must include:
- A brief description of the project (maximum 1,000 words) that addresses the following points:
- overview of the project, including a statement of its objectives
- explanation of need
- intended outcomes of the project
- Detailed budget detailing all anticipated expenses and other sources of funding.
- Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages) of the applicant(s). In addition, please include information about any visiting speakers or other participants who might be invited to be part of this project.
- Letter for support from the applicant’s Department Chair or, if the applicant is themselves a Chair, from the Dean, clearly indicating what departmental or other resources are available for this project.
