Panelists will discuss how they consider applicants with humanities degrees, how applicants can best explain their skills, and will give humanities students practical advice on resumes, cover letters, and other aspects of the job/internship search from an HR perspective.
Lonnie Brown is the Talent Acquisition Manager at the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, a nationally recognized leader in providing safe quality affordable housing for individuals and families of Cuyahoga County. Lonnie leads the recruitment and selection efforts to attract, recruit, and hire top internal and external talent for CMHA positions. Lonnie graduated from CWRU with a BA in History and American Studies, and earned her MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management.
Rachel Ligman is an HR professional with over 10 years of experience in a variety of HR roles, including training, recruiting, career coaching, and early talent management. Rachel holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Miami University, and a Master’s degree in Higher Education & Student Affairs from Ohio State. She began her professional career with Nationwide Insurance, where she joined an IT project team as a Commercial Processor (a fancy title for data entry and basic coding). In that role, she leveraged her analytic skills to become a team lead, and also took on a role as trainer for new hires to the department. It was this activity that sparked her interest in the HR function. From there, she took on a role as a Career Advisor with the College of Engineering at Ohio State, and was promoted to the Co-op & Internship Program Manager. She joined Eaton in 2011 and has held a variety of roles: Campus Manager for university recruitment; Program Manager for the Operations Leadership Development Program; currently serving as the University Relations Manager for North America, and the operations lead for the Early Talent Center of Expertise. On a personal note, she has 2 small children and a wonderful husband, who are her only hobbies at the moment.
Kimberly Little is an accomplished and strategic human resources executive with over 20 years of experience in the automotive and chemical industries. Kimberly has held many diverse positions in operations, lean/six sigma, quality engineering and labor relations that have later evolved into leadership roles in human resources. Through these experiences, she has developed a strong blend of strategy development, business acumen and problem solving which has gained her the ability to analyze situations quickly and ultimately apply them to develop strategic business solutions from an HR perspective. She has broad international and multicultural expertise developed through her experiences at General Motors, Saint-Gobain Corporation, Johnson Controls and now Knorr – Bremse, Bendix.
Ali Thomas comes to our Humanities@Work program by way of her current position as Human Resources Director at the Cleveland Sight Center, where she has been since February of 2015. Prior to that, Ali’s 20+ year human resources career spans many different types of organizations, including for-profits, non-profits, retail, education, and service environments. She earned her B.A. in Psychology at the University of Cincinnati and her Professional in Human Resources certification from the Human Resources Certification Institute. Recruiting, retention, employee benefits, and employee/labor relations are all areas where Ali has led in the organizations where she has worked including The Centers for Families and Children and Wawa, Inc. She lives in North Royalton with her husband, two daughters, and her rescued Yellow Labrador/Golden Retriever mix Gypsy.
